What is the difference between backup and disaster recovery?

Backup protects data by creating copies that can be restored. Disaster recovery goes further — it enables entire systems (servers, applications, operating systems) to be brought back to a running state within defined time objectives, often on standby cloud infrastructure.

What do RTO and RPO mean?

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the maximum acceptable downtime after an incident. Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is the maximum acceptable data loss measured in time — for example, an RPO of 1 hour means you could lose up to 1 hour of data. Both are configured per workload.

Can disaster recovery be tested without affecting production?
