South African businesses no longer need to be convinced that ransomware exists. The harder question is whether their systems can be restored fast enough to protect revenue, customers and reputation when prevention fails.
According to INTERPOL’s 2025 Africa Cyberthreat Assessment, South Africa recorded 17,849 ransomware detections in 2024—the highest reported number on the continent. The Acronis Cyberthreats Report H1 2025 subsequently reported a 70% year-on-year increase in publicly known ransomware victims globally.
For MSPs, this turns recovery from a technical feature into a board-level business service.
Backup completion is not the same as recoverability
A green backup status answers only one question: did a job run? It does not prove that the right workloads are protected, that the recovery point meets the client’s tolerance for data loss, that credentials are isolated, that a clean copy exists or that the business can resume within an acceptable time.
Ransomware also targets the recovery path. Attackers may delete snapshots, compromise backup credentials, encrypt network-connected repositories or remain dormant long enough to contaminate several restore points. A service built only around job completion can therefore report success while recovery risk is growing.
Build the service around RPO and RTO
A credible recovery product begins with two business decisions. Recovery point objective (RPO) defines how much data the organisation can afford to lose. Recovery time objective (RTO) defines how long the organisation can tolerate disruption. These targets should be agreed per workload, not copied from a generic policy.
The MSP can then design protection tiers around the outcome:
- Essential protection for endpoints and cloud data, with monitored backup, retention and routine restore checks.
- Business recovery for critical servers and applications, with tighter RPOs, documented runbooks and scheduled recovery testing.
- Continuity for workloads where prolonged downtime is unacceptable, using disaster recovery orchestration and rapid failover capability.
This approach changes the commercial conversation. The client is no longer comparing storage price per gigabyte; it is choosing how much operational interruption it can accept.
Unify security and recovery
Soteria Cloud enables partners to deliver backup, Advanced Disaster Recovery, EDR/XDR, MDR, email security, DLP and RMM through Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. Protection and recovery share context instead of operating in isolation.
Active protection can help stop ransomware behaviour. EDR/XDR can expose the attack chain. RMM supports patching and operational hygiene. Backup and disaster recovery provide a route back to clean operations. When these capabilities are coordinated, the MSP can contain the incident, understand the blast radius and recover the correct systems with fewer hand-offs.
Make recovery readiness visible
The most valuable monthly report is not a list of completed jobs. It is a recovery-readiness report that shows protected versus unprotected workloads, policy exceptions, backup health, last successful restore test, achieved RPO, estimated RTO and actions requiring client approval.
Quarterly or biannual recovery exercises can then validate the runbook. A short tabletop exercise should cover who declares an incident, who communicates with the client, how clean restore points are selected, how credentials are reset and what evidence is retained. Technical recovery without operational coordination is only half a plan.
Local resilience, partner ownership
Soteria Cloud supports partners from South Africa with local Acronis cloud infrastructure, Rand-based billing and flexible service models. Primary and replicated copies across geographically separated South African data-centre locations help partners align recovery architecture with local business requirements. The reseller remains the trusted adviser and owner of the customer relationship.
Ransomware is a security event, but its decisive business moment is recovery. MSPs that can demonstrate recoverability—not merely promise backup—will be better positioned to protect clients, defend margin and build long-term trust.
